The Bihar government today said it will abide by the directive of the Supreme Court and submit a report explaining the police's conduct in using coercive measures against protesting contractual teachers.

"We will honour the apex court's directive and submit a report explaining the sequence of events during the violent protest by the contractual teachers and the circumstances in which the police took various measures to bring law and order situation under control," the Water Resources Department (WRD) Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said.

The state government will find out about the set of queries put up by the Supreme Court over police action on the protesters and submit reply to all those queries on the next date of hearing in the matter, he said.

"We will apprise the honourable court about violent actions by the protesters putting in grave peril the lives of the policemen on duty and the general public and the circumstances in which the police had to take strong measures in self-defence and also to bring the law and order situation under control," Chaudhary said.

Bihar Police had yesterday resorted to baton charge and fired tear gas shells during a protest by contractual teachers outside the Assembly in Patna, demanding regularisation of their jobs and pay parity with regular teachers.

Over 2.25 lakh contractual teachers have been agitating for their demands.

Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports on the incident, the Supreme Court today sought explanation from the state on the conduct of police personnel by Monday.
