MMS, Sushma Exchange Shayari in Lok Sabha
It was a clash of couplets between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Leader of Opposition Sushma Swaraj in the Lok Sabha as the debate on Motion of Thanks to the President's Address peaked today.

The Prime Minister, while replying to the debate, attacked BJP with an Urdu couplet saying "Humko hai unse wafa ke umeed, jo jante nai hai wafa kya hai (We are expecting loyalty from those who do not know the meaning of the word)".

He also took a jibe at the bravado of BJP leaders by narrating another couplet -- "jo garajte hain, woh baraste nahi (Thunderous clouds do not bring showers)".

Singh was responding to the "choicest abuses" hurled by BJP leaders against Congress leadership and said he cannot reply in the same language.

Soon after he completed his speech, Swaraj said that in the world of poetry, there is a "debt" if a couplet is not responded to with a couplet.

And she went on say: "Kuch toh majboorian rahee hongi, yun hee koi bewafa nahee hota (there must have been some compulsions, nobody becomes disloyal for no reason)."

She added another couplet addressed to the Prime Minister: "Tumhe wafa yaad nahi, humein jafa yaad nahi. Zindagi aur maut ke toh do hi tarane hein, ek tumhe yaad nahi, ek hamein yaad nahi (you don't remember my loyalty, I don't remember your disloyalty, life has only two songs - one you don't remember, one I don't remember.)"

BJP President Rajnath Singh, who was singled out in the attack by the Prime Minister, observed that in the last nine years, he had never seen Manmohan Singh as "aggressive" as today.

He then went on to take a swipe on the Prime Minister by saying that a flame burns the most aggressively when it is about to extinguish.

Unfortunate that both 'leaders', are propped up - one for his religion and the other for her gender.

It would have been apt for MMS to conclude with...

Baq raha hoon, junoon mein kya kya kuch

Khuda kare ke na samjha kare koi...

(While he country continues cry in pain...

Ibn-e-Mariyam hua karein koi, mere dukh ki dawa kare koi!)

These couplets and exchanges are India's favorite timepass - hot air, euphemisms, whatever you wish to call them. I'd like to see some real business and useful policy making rather than shayari. Spare us the gas and get some meaningful stuff done!!

Couple of years ago, while debating on WikiLeaks issue in Parliament, Prime Minister presented few lines for Sushma Swaraj, composed by great poet Allama Iqbal who is also national poet of Pakistan:

"Mana ki tere deed ke kaabil nahin hoon main
Tu mera shauk toh dekh, mera intezar toh kar."

Translation :

"I admit I am not worth your attention (affection),

but look at (appreciate) my interest (committment) and my patience."

Manmohan was smiling very mischeviously while expressing the shayari, and the whole house burst out with laughter (for a change).

In response,Sushma Swaraj smiled but recited another couplet, again by Iqbal :

"Na idhar udhar ki tu baat kar, yeh bata ki kafila kyon luta,

hamen rahjano se gila nahin, teri rahbari ka sawal hai…"

Translation :

Don’t make excuses, just explain how the caravan got looted. I am not concerned about the looters, but it is a question of your existence (leadership).

Such exchanges do liven up the otherwise drab discussions and often wake up a few of the members seen sleeping on their seats !
