Punjab: Two Cops Suspended for Thrashing Girl
A 22-year-old girl and her father were allegedly thrashed by policemen when they sought action against some persons who teased the girl and passed vulgar comments in full public view in Tarn Taran district.

"It is unfortunate on the part of the police to hit a girl," said SSP Kanwaljit Singh Dhillon, adding that he had placed both Davinder Singh and Saraj Singh under suspension and marked a departmental inquiry against the duo.

However, the officer said that father of the girl, Kashmir Singh was drunk and creating "nuisance" at a marriage function at Gobindwal road last night.

When police personnel reached the spot and caught hold of Kashmir, his daughter resisted, the SSP said.

Kashmir's daughter Harbinder Kaur intervened and resisted while her father was being taken away to police station, the SSP said.

In the melee, the turbans (head gears) of two head constables were tossed up following which they beat the girl.

However, the girl in her complaint alleged that last night, while she along with her father was coming home after attending a marriage function a truck driver and his accomplices started to tease her besides passing vulgar comments.

However, the SSP said that father of the girl was badly drunken and manhandled the policemen who later cane charged him.

Irked by the police action, the girl (complainant) removed the turban of the two policemen, who in retaliation beat up the girl with wooden sticks, the officer said.

He said that both the constables have been suspended.

SSP said that, at the same time, fault of Kashmir Singh, father of the girl, could not be ignored as he was drunk and was the "bone of contention for creating trouble with the truck driver".

Girl was also at fault who later jumped into the dispute and removed the turban of the policemen on duty, he said.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal asked DGP Sumedh Singh to take strict action against the police personnel.

He said that it was imperative for every member of Punjab Police force to act in a most disciplined and professional manner and reiterated zero tolerance towards any misconduct especially towards women.

Badal said that since last four years he was making efforts for gender sensitisation among police personnel besides increasing the strength of women in the police force.

He said that instructions were already in place for using women police force while dealing with women and he would not tolerate any indiscipline in the force.

The Deputy CM said that strict action would be taken against those found guilty and said that nobody was above law.

Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in Punjab Assembly Sunil Kumar Jakhar condemned the incident and attacked the Parkash Singh Badal government for its alleged failure on law and order front.

"A goonda raj is prevailing in Punjab," he alleged.

May be true what SSP says. But, police has no credibility in India. I have seen at first hand some of my friend at IIT, who later joined IPS and became just like any othe "Tullaa".

When only women are protected against violence from the police, it is called GENDER RACISM and this fact must be recognised by the media.

Seen the TV footage of the incident on INDIA TV. Clear case of abuse of official power by policeman and violation of human rights. The responsible police officials should be dismissed summarily. But instead of doing so SSP seems to be subscribing to the frivolous story of tossing of turbans of policeman. Clever device to accuse the complainant even before the complainant can accuse. As the matter was videographed and aired on a prominent news channel the eye wash of suspension and enquiry. The SSP himself needs to be dismissed summarily for laking sense of duty in trying to justify blatant abuse of power by his subordinates as if he sees nothing wrong in a two policeman showing their manliness (or may be manless) by cane charging a lone woman. If CM of Punjab or the PM of India have any self respect in them least expected is summarily dismissal of not only the two guilty  cops but also of the SSP whose impotence in taking stern action emboldens rogue policeman.
