Eleven people were killed and three others injured when a jeep plunged into Sai River in Jalalpur area, police said here today.
The incident occurred late last night when the jeep rammed into the railing of a bridge and plunged into the river near Ijari village, killing 11 people on the spot, they said.
Police said three persons were injured in the accident of which two have been referred to Varanasi in a serious condition.
The victims were returning from Varanasi after a cremation.
Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav conveyed deep condolences to the families of those killed in the mishap.
An official spokesman said the chief minister also extended an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakhs each to families of those killed in the mishap, Rs 50,000 each to the seriously injured and Rs. 20,000 to those who sustained minor injuries.
