NC-Led Coalition in J&K Is a Puppet Govt: PDP
Criticising the manner in which Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's execution was handled, Opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today accused the Omar Abdullah-led coalition of being a puppet government which had failed to protect basic human rights of its people.

"It is a humane issue, a person who has got the right...Our Constitution says that if a person is hanged he should be allowed to meet his family"

"You did not allow him to meet his family. Whatever has happened is past now, but today the big issue is that his mortal remains are not being handed over to his family," Leader of the Opposition in J&K Assembly Mehbooba Mufti told reporters here today

Mufti accused the National Conference-led government of not even discussing the issue and said they should take a lesson from other state governments on the manner in which they have handled similar situations.

"Don't they learn from Tamil Nadu, I think they should learn a lesson from the leaders of Tamil Nadu, whether it is Jayalalitha or Karunanidhi, how they are fighting for their own people, for the lives of their own people".

"Look at Punjab, (Chief Minister) Parkash Singh Badal went to Delhi along with his son and said that they won't allow hanging of Beant Singh's killers", she said.

"But here this puppet government has failed miserably to protect the rights of its people...Even a convict has rights, his family has rights," Mufti said.

She further accused the Omar Abdullah-led government of discrediting mainstream politics and pushing more and more people to turn towards separatists.

"I believe somewhere National Conference feels happy about discrediting mainstream politics. More people are turning towards separatism due to dissatisfaction from mainstream politics. (it is) very unfortunate," Mufti said.

Questioning Abdullah's wisdom over the issue of Guru's hanging, Mufti said that he should have taken into consideration the fallout of the incident before giving his consent for the execution.

"This government has been a part and parcel of the UPA. The Chief Minister says he was against Afzal Guru's hanging then why did not he put his foot down? Why he was not able to persuade them? Why did not he discuss the nitty-gritty, the fall out?" Mehbooba asked.

"Any CM who understands the consequences of this action would have done each and everything to persuade the leaders in New Delhi, be it the PM, be it the UPA Chairperson," she said.

On House being adjourned for the day as various parties had demanded Guru's mortal remains be handed over to his family, Mufti said the matter needs to be discussed by all parties in the Assembly.

"Speaker Mubark Gul said he was not working on a remote control, but the way he denied all this, we don't know whether he is working on a remote control or not," she said.

"If we came to the Assembly for discussion in a peaceful manner I don't know what is going on between them, why are they wasting the time of the House, why don't they want to discuss this issue?", she questioned.

Meanwhile, on the question of the safety of Panches and Sarpanches in the State, she said NC led government only wanted to take credit for conducting Panchayat elections and were not willing to empower them.

"I heard the CM saying last time that we can't give security to all, but there are certain areas and those people who feel vulnerable they can apply to us, we can give them security. But unfortunately even the people who have given the application have not been provided the security.

"Their priority was to conduct the elections and take credit for conducting elections not for empowerment. More than two years have passed but Panchayat members have not been empowered. This government has got all its priorities very much wrong, they don't have the right priorities. Every day the situation in J&K is going from bad to worse," she said.
