J&K Assembly Adjourned After Furore Over Afzal Issue
The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly was today rocked by repeated disruptions which ultimately led to the House being adjourned for the day as opposition parties demanded the Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru's mortal remains to be handed over to his family.

Cutting across party lines, members of the House from the ruling National Conference as well as opposition PDP and CPI(M) had moved adjournment motions seeking discussion on the aftermath of Guru's execution and handing over his mortal remains to his family.

Led by leader of Opposition Mehbooba Mufti, PDP legislators flashed placards and called for adjournment of business to discuss the issue with CPI(M) member MY Tarigami, too, joining them to urge Speaker Mubarak Gul to concede their demand.

But when the Speaker tried to pacify them saying that a discussion would be held in due course, PDP members resorted to protest demonstrations saying --Guru ki body koo wapas karoo, wapas karoo--.

"If there is a serious issue, (then) you have to suspend the normal business and discuss (the same). But I fail to understand the attitude of this government (since yesterday)," Mehbooba later told reporters.

The protests continued for over 15 minutes forcing the Speaker to adjourn the House.

Later as House assembled again after nearly 45 minutes, Speaker said that he has received adjournment motions of NC's five members, PDP and CPIM and would decide over them for suitable time for discussion.

However, unmoved by the reply, PDP legislators again resorted to protests and Assembly witnessed noisy scenes even as the Speaker started discussion on Governor's address.

There was uproarious scenes and pandemonium broke in the house forcing speaker to adjourned the house around 1200 hours and it assembled again at 1254 hours, with continuance of the protests by PDP and its legislators.

The Speaker then adjourned the house for the day.

Meanwhile, the PDP moved a fresh request to the Assembly speaker seeking a discussion in the House tomorrow on the issue of Afzal Guru's hanging.

Party spokesperson Naeem Akhtar said the PDP wanted a discussion on circumstances under which Guru was hanged, and how his family was deprived of the possession of his body.

The CPI(M) and Peoples Democratic Front also said they will press for their demand of discussion on the issue once the Assembly proceedings begin tomorrow.

CPI(M) MLA M Y Tarigami and PDF chief Hakim Mohammad Yasin told reporters they had to stage a walkout from the Assembly after the Speaker did not concede to their demand to adjourn the House for discussion on Afzal issue.
