Meghalaya

The Congress retained power in Meghalaya after emerging as the single largest party, bagging 29 seats, 2 short of an absolute majority, in the Assembly election results that were declared today.

In the 2008 Assembly election, the Congress had bagged 25 seats.

But NPP managed to bag only two seats, saving itself from the ignominy of getting wiped off the scene in the Garo Hills region, once considered the bastion of the former Lok Sabha Speaker.

The NCP on the other hand won two seats with its incumbent deputy speaker Sanbor Shullai retaining his urban South Shillong constituency.

The United Democratic Party, which was the key ally of the Congress for the past three years in the Meghalaya United Alliance coalition government, could retain eight out of 11 seats it won in 2008.

Among Congress winners are cabinet minister H D R Lyngdoh and Prestone Tynsong. Both retained their seats.

Former alliance partners UDP won eight seats and the HSPDP three

The much tomtomed campaign of the PM in wait, has turned out to be "full of sound and fury signifying nothing", to quote Shakespeare. It was just the repeat of his earlier innings in UP, Bihar and Gujarat, where Congress could hardly enter the  carridors of power. The party high command has missed badly to appraise Rahulji of  the social, cultural, and above all, the corrupt free political climate of Tripura which deprived of him the pulse of the voters. The voters were less enamoured of Rahul's jibe to drive the CPM out of India as even the worst critics of CPM hardly disputed the spartan life of Sri.Monik Sarkar.

It is good news that CPM is leading in 29.Two fanatical Christians,Rahul Gandhi and Hrangkwal winning will spell the doom for the Hindus of Tripura. This Hrangkwal who murdered 500 innocent Bengali Hindus,in Mandai massacre, should have been hanged for his crime, but being a bosom friend of Sonia Gandhi,he is freely roaming as a politician.
