A Maoist wanted in connection with several cases today surrendered before the police following disillusionment with activities of the red rebels, police said.

Xaviyar Lugun alias Willaim Lugun (32) of Purunapani-Roxi area in K Balang police station, who was involved in Maoist activities in Saranda forest of Odisha-Jharkhand border area surrendered before the Rourkela police, they said.

He had joined the ultra-left outfit in 2002, the police said.

"Lugun found that small and minor tribal children were being lured to join the organisation and later put before security forces," SP (Rourkela) Amitendranath Sinha said.

"Besides, lady cadre were harassed mentally and abused sexually. This led him to surrender as he realised that the outfit was not working for the poor but for the interest of some senior cadre," Sinha said.

Lugun was part of the dreaded Platoon 22 of South Chotanagpur division and the Local Regular Guerrilla Squad (LRGS). He was second in command in the self defence squad, the SP said.

Lugun has 23 cases against him registered under K Balang,Chandiposh and Bisra police stations, the SP said.

He was involved in ambushes on police party, blasting of schools, PHCs, railway tracks, killing of innocent villagers of Topadihi and Langalakata, arson and loot at Roxi, they said.
