A 12-hour bandh has been called by the Congress in Murshidabad district on February 13 to protest "false cases" against party workers and Union minister Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in connection with the violence at the district magistrate's office.
The bandh has been called to protest false cases against 1,200 Congress workers, including himself, Chowdhury, who is also the district Congress committee president, told a press conference here today.
"Congress workers are being slapped with false cases in Murshidabad district since this is where the party has its best organisation in the state and police are working for the ruling party (Trinamool Congress). The bandh is against it," the Union Minister of State for Railways said.
Congress workers went on a rampage on February 7, vandalising district magistrate Rajiv Kumar's office when he declined to accept a memorandum on the alleged custodial death of a party worker on January 7 and demand of punishment of the policemen concerned. The memorandum had asked for a CBI inquiry into the matter.
