After the ban in Tamil Nadu, Kamal Haasan's Vishwaroopam may be prevented from screening in Uttar Pradesh if it is found that the film "hurts the sentiments" of Muslims and indulges in "character assassination", the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) said today.

"Officials concerned would see the film thoroughly; if it is found to be good and entertaining (then it is) fine, or else, it would not be allowed to run in UP," Samajwadi Party general secretary Ram Asrey Kushwaha told reporters here.

"If it indulges in character assassination, it would not be screened in the state...," Kushwaha said.

The veteran actor's spy thriller has run into trouble in Tamil Nadu where the High Court yesterday stayed its screening over the sensitive content of the film.

"It appears that there are some portions which hurt the sentiments of a religious group or caste... Officials would look into it," the SP leader added.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav today side-stepped a query on the controversy surrounding Kamal Haasan-starrer Vishwaroopam, saying it would not be proper to say anything before watching the movie.

"We are getting to hear all sorts of things about the movie through newspapers and news channels. What the contents of the movie are, nobody knows and it is very difficult to hazard a guess on the basis of trailers appearing on television. And it would not be proper to say anything regarding the controversy before watching the movie," Yadav told reporters here.

The trilingual spy thriller has drawn the ire of a number of Muslim outfits which have alleged that the movies shows the community in a bad light, following which its release has been stalled in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

Replying to a query about corruption charges against his predecessor Mayawati, Akhilesh said, "She has been awarded the harshest punishment by the people of the state who voted her out of power in the Assembly polls held last year. Besides, the law will obviously take its own course".

The UP chief minister also made an unscheduled visit to the ongoing Maha Kumbh congregation, where he offered prayers at the famous Hanuman temple situated close to the holy sangam.

He also took stock of arrangements in place for the event which began on January 14 and will continue till March 10.

"Adequate availability of clean water in the Ganga will be ensured by the government by releasing sufficient water from dams upstream. Besides care will be taken to ensure that there are no complaints with regard to facilities for pilgrims and sadhus," the chief minister said.

Akhilesh condoled the death of an eight-year-old girl who died at the Safdarjung hospital in Delhi while undergoing treatment for burn injuries she had sustained at a fire that had erupted at Maha Kumbh ground last week.

"It is the most unfortunate thing to have happened. The administration did its best to save the child...," he said.

A total of 19 people were injured in the fire that had erupted on Friday last due to leakage of a gas cylinder inside a tent where devotees from various places in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh were camping.
