From political biographies of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Narendra Modi to former army chief Gen V K Singh's memoirs to a bevy of fictional titles by India's most prolific writers including the indomitable Khushwant Singh, 2013 has an interesting store for booklovers.

While Rupa will publish The Good, the Bad and the Ridiculous by Khushwant Singh (with Humra Quraishi), another offering from his stable Khushwantnama: The Lessons of My Life will be brought out by Penguin.

Pan Macmillan India publisher Saugata Mukherjee says the house will publish quality fiction and non-fiction in equal measure.

"Some of the books to watch out for would be Jayant Kripalani's New Market Tales, Amana Fontanella Khan's The Pink Sari Revolution Bhaichand Patel's Radhs's Song and Nirmala Sitharaman's Atal Behari Vajpayee: A Political Biography, Mukherjee told PTI.

HarperCollins upcoming list includes Learning to Serve (Vijay Amritraj), Bombay Velvet by Gyan Prakash, Riding the Wave: Seven Leaders of Change by Mini Menon, Dharavi by Joseph Campana, The New Bihar: An Unusual Story of Governance and Development (N K Singh and Nicholas Stern), Locks, Mahabharata & Mathematics: An Exploration of Unexpected Parallels by V Ragunathan, Anuja Chauhan's Those Pricey Thakur Girls and The Cripple and His Talismans by Anosh Irani.

The house will also publish a cook book by chef-TV host Vicky Ratnani called Vicky Goes Veg.

The big titles that Westland will be coming out this year are The Secret Wish List by Preeti Shenoy, RIP by Mukul Deva, Narendra Modi: The Man, The Times by Nilanjan Mukhopodhyay, Sophie Says by Judy Balan and Amish's The Oath of the Vayuputras.

Penguin's list has quite a few books from authors of Pakistan and Bangladesh.

How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia is a virtuoso novel by The Reluctant Fundamentalist writer Mohsin Hamid. There is also The Reluctant Fundamentalist: From Book to Film. Conceptualised by Mira Nair, it is an essential guide to the making of a landmark film.

The Black Cat by Neamat Imam is a dark and dystopian portrait of Bangladesh under its first prime minister. Then there is Their Language of Love, a collection of stories by one of Pakistan's finest novelists Bapsi Sidhwa.

Penguin also has books by Gulzar (Half a Rupee: Stories), Sunil Gangopadhyay (Classic Sunil Gangopadhyay) and Amit Chaudhuri (Calcutta: Two Years in The City). It will also publish Habib Tanvir's Memoirs (translated by Mahmood Farooqui), Adi Godrej: A Biography by Nandini Bhaskaran, Sachin: Cricketer of the Century by Vimal Kumar and My Yummy Mummy Guide by Karishma Kapoor. 

Rahul Srivastava, director (marketing and sales) at Simon & Shuster India, says, "Year 2013 looks promising with publication of The Accidental Apprentice by Vikas Swarup, a bodybuilding book by Kris Gethin who is training Hritik Roshan since last year and Kiswar Desai's new book Sea of Innocence in the first few months."

Aleph will publish "This Unquiet Land: Dispatches from India's Fault Lines" by Barkha Dutt, "The Autobiography of General V.K. Singh" by V K Singh (with Kunal Verma), Tiger Fire: The Definitive Book of the Indian Tiger by Valmik Thapar and The Dynasty: The Nehrus and the Gandhis by Pranay Gupte among other books.

Rupa's list includes Stories From My Life by A P J Abdul Kalam, Milestones on the Road by MTV-fame Raghu Ram, Fallen Angel: The Rise and Fall of Rajat Gupta by Sandipan Deb and The Poet Speaks: The Songs of Prasoon Joshi by the lyricist.

Random House India has In Different Form by Yuvraj Singh (also in leather bound), Highway on My Plate-2 by Rocky Singh and Mayur Sharma and History of Bhutan by Karma Phuntsho.

2013 is a big year for Zubaan as it celebrates its 10th birthday.

Says its commissioning editor Anita Roy, "To mark the occasion, we're bringing out 10 of our best titles featuring a bold new design, and initiating a series of bookstore events and special promotions throughout the year. We're launching three major books at the Jaipur Literary Festival: Laxmi Dhaul's In the Shadow of Freedom: Three Lives in Hitler's Berlin and Gandhi's India; and Of Mothers and Others, edited by Jaishree Misra and supported by Save the Children; and A Life Apart, an autobiography by Prabha Khaitan translated from Hindi by award-winning translator, Ira Pande.

Besides, Zubaan will pay tribute to one of Assam's foremost writers and peace campaigners, Indira Goswami (1942? 2011).

Set in late 19th century Assam, The Bronze Sword of Tengphakhri Tehsildar is the heroic tale of a Bodo freedom fighter who was, arguably, the first woman revenue collector in British India. It was Indira Goswami's last work of fiction and this is the first-ever English edition, translated from the Assamese by Aruni Kashyap.
