Cong Snubs Tharoor for His Tweet on Delhi Braveheart

Congress today snubbed Union Minister Shashi Tharoor for his tweet favouring making public the identity of the Delhi gang-rape victim and naming the proposed anti-rape legislation after her.

"It is his personal opinion. I suggest that since he is a part of the government, he should have given the suggestion to the government rather than making any such statement in public. Party forum is also open for giving suggestions.

"It would have been better had he given this advice to the government as after all the decision has to be taken at their level and Home Minister (Sushilkumar Shinde) has to take the decision," party spokesperson Rashid Alvi told reporters here.

Tharoor, Minister of State for Human Resources Development, had yesterday favoured making public the identity of the gang-rape victim wondering what interest was served by keeping her name under wraps.

He also said the revised anti-rape legislation should be named after the victim if her parents do not have any objection.

Congress' disapproval of Tharoor's remarks has interestingly come on a day when the family of the victim said it had no objection to naming the proposed new anti-rape law after the girl.

Alvi, however, said "there is no such practice in our country where laws of Indian Penal Code are named after indviduals, unlike in the US where they are named after the senators who move the bills.

>>>>Jawaharla Nehru Port, Jawahar Dweep (ex-Butcher Island) and Indira (ex-Alexandra) Dock. I suppose it's just a matter of time before the Ballard Pier becomes Rahul Gandhi Pier.

Once again stating a  fact. There  are not laws named after any one in the Nehru/Indira Gandhi family.. In mumbai you have Shiaji this and shivaji that. I do not think any one in government has objected to namimg a street or a intersection after the rape victim.

>>>>So what if the Sarda Act was enacted in 1929. It is still law isn't it. Any new act will have some official long winded title. The linking of the Act with the name would enable the person responsible to be remembered.

Not really true, the problem is when you have hundreds of laws attached to a name then you tend to forget it. Just to clarify I am  not against naming a law after a victim . .I was just stating a fact below.

That was in 1929, before independence. but there is no such practice after independence. The official name is child marriage restraint Act.

So what if the Sarda Act was enacted in 1929. It is still law isn't it. Any new act will have some official long winded title. The linking of the Act with the name would enable the person responsible to be remembered.

Of course, as has been pointed out several times, such a proposal is unthinkable in India unless the name is Nehru or Gandhi and maybe Vadra in due course. eg. In Mumbai in the port alone, we have Jawaharla Nehru Port, Jawahar Dweep (ex-Butcher Island) and Indira (ex-Alexandra) Dock. I suppose it's just a matter of time before the Ballard Pier becomes Rahul Gandhi Pier.

How dare he suggest any other names than the FAKE GHANDI"S for anything in India, that too when Madame Mayno is ruling? Her chamchas will commit suicide. Hey Shinde her name is published in the British daily already.

Tharoor was always the target of illiterate congressis, this is not the first time and he will get used to it.
