Honour Braveheart With Ashoka Chakra: Delhi BJP to PM
The Delhi unit of BJP today demanded that the 23-year-old gangrape victim be honoured with the Ashoka Chakra, the country's highest civilian award for bravery, as her courage has "inspired the whole nation".

In letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, BJP state unit president Vijender Gupta made the demand to honour the girl posthumously during Republic Day.

"The courage and bravery she exhibited has inspired the whole nation and shaken our national consciousness," Gupta stated in the letter.

He cited the case of India's youngest recipient of the Ashoka Chakra, Neerja Bhanot, to emphasise the need to honour the young paramedical student, who died in a Singapore hospital after being brutally assaulted in a moving bus here on December 16.

Bhanot, who was a flight attendant with Pan Am airlines, died while saving passengers from terrorists on board the hijacked Pan Am Flight 73 on September 5, 1986.

"You were one of the few people who were present at the time her body returned from Singapore and I am confident that you will consider the feeling of the nation to honour her with the Ashoka Chakra," Gupta said in the letter.

Delhi BJP also demanded resignation of Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit alleging that she had failed in providing security to the people of Delhi.

The opposition party alleged that criminals are not afraid of law and police due to "inactiveness" of Delhi government.

"This government has no moral rights to continue in power. The main cause of this incident is the chaotic public transport of Delhi. Government has failed to install GPS in buses and autos," a BJP statement said.

Naming laws, giving Ashok Chakra (for all I care even Bharat Ratna), naming streets, naming a day, creating another memorial, etc. are all great idea. Though I see signs of the typical desi solution to serious issues - lip service and symbolism - all form (very contemporary and modern sounding) - no substance (that requires patient hard work). Sure the US (and many other countries probably do these great symbolic things) but in parallel, serious work is also put in. I am finding the one major difference between the 3rd world and developed world is "professionalism" - doing a job well because it is my job (not because of all the other factors).

The most pressing and burning issue isn't new laws - it is to make "rule of law" machinery function. More laws with the present level of functioning of "rule of law" are useless. Most of our laws today aren't worth the paper they are printed on and they might as well be printed on toilet paper  (the cartoonist who got hauled for sedition wasn't wrong). Of course, it is a much tougher problem to fix, requiring very tough work and possibly not something that can win elections.

Yesterday the BJP was sneering at Tharoor's suggestion that Braveheart's name be revealed and that she should be honored in some way. But now that the family has agreed with Tharoor's suggestion, the BJP wants to award her Ashok Chakra!

Honour Braveheart With Ashoka Chakra: Delhi BJP to PM >>> let us stop this symbolic gestures which cost nothing and are useless.

Just work to ensure proper deterrence and fast justice so that there are no so many crimes against women.

Why stop with Ashoka Chakra? Award Bharat Ratna, Param Vir Chakra and whatever else is out there.

The truly tragic incident has made a lot of Indians completely lose their emotional maturity. BJP is the latest example.

Strange sugestions are being offered by interested parties and persons. Nineteen dalit girls/women including pregnant women have been raped in one month or so in Haryana. The government there has not even lodged FIRs against the accused. The country is just indifferent and apathetic. The agitators are out on the street are interested in one case only. The Ballia girl aalone did not sufer the ignominy but hundreds of dalit and tribal women have been victims of same crime. Please do not pander to one particular section, we know, who they are.

We are strongly resentful as a result.

The Central Government must move in and take action as per law and do everything they want to do for the rape victim of Ballia. If they don't, we will believe the vested interest behind the screen have been playing role to benefit the girl's family for unexplained reasons, which we guess cannot be other than ca......

Please note it.
