One person was arrested after a woman 'sarpanch' of the ruling BJD in Kendrapara district was assaulted allegedly by over a dozen miscreants, police said today.
Binodini Mallick, the 'sarpanch' of Ghaghra Gram Panchayat in Kendrapara district was admitted to SCB Medical College Hospital here after she was attacked last night.
Mallick sustained injured on head, legs and arms, he said adding that her condition is now stable.
Sub Divisional Police Officer of Pattamundai, Ramachandra Goud confirmed that the miscreants opposed her style of functioning and the attack was politically motivated.
Speaking from the hospital, Mallick said, "Though I had informed the police about the possibility of an attack on me, no action was taken."
Angry over inaction by the police, Mallick's supporters today protested outside the police station in Nikirai area on the outskirts of Kendrapara township.
"As a precautionary measure, a section of armed police has been deployed at the spot," Goud said.
However, police has identified a dozen other miscreants involved in the attack and a search is on to nab them, he said.
