ULFA's Paresh Barua-led anti-talk faction has served extortion notices to five sitting
MLAs, including four from the Congress and one of the BJP, of Upper Assam constituencies.
The notices have been served among others to two family members of late Chief Minister Hiteshwar Saikia including his son Debabrata Saikia of Nazira constituency and brother-in-law Membor Gogoi of
Teok, top police sources said here today.
The other Congress MLAs who got the notices include Rupjyoti Kurmi of Mariani and Bolin Chetia of
Sadiya. BJP's Dilip Moran of Doomdooma constituency has also received a similar notice.Through the notice the outfit has demanded huge amount of money from the legislators.
The legislators have apprised the police of the demand notes received by them.
Extortion demands have increased in the recent months in the Upper Assam districts of
Jorhat, Sibsagar, Dibrugarh and Tinuskia and there are intelligence reports of the outfit making efforts to organise in a big way in these districts.
Upper Assam Commissioner Syed Iftikar Hussain said that following these reports of extortion demands served to legislators, the overall security scenario in these districts have been reviewed.
All Superintendents of Police of the four districts have been directed to be in regular touch with the legislators and other politicians of the districts.
Meanwhile, security has been stepped up in the four districts and several ULFA cadres and linkmen have been arrested by security forces recently.
