Political Parties Hail Kasab's Execution

Political parties, and people at large, in various parts of India welcomed the execution of 26/11 terrorist Ajmal Kasab. While some parties took out celebration rallies, people and students took to streets and burst firecrackers.

Mumbai

Shiv Sena spokesman Sanjay Raut said Balasaheb Thackeray, who passed away last Saturday, would have been a happy man today.

MPCC president Manikrao Thakre expressed satisfaction at Kasab's execution. "This is a true homage to the victims and martyrs of 26/11," he added.

Thakre said the execution proves that the country's political system and law and judiciary system can give a fitting response to terror elements.

Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Vinod Tawde visited late Tukaram Ombale memorial to pay his respects to the constable who caught Kasab alive.

Home Minister R R Patil also offered floral tributes at the memorial of Ombale to pay his respects.

Maharashtra BJP president Sudhir Mungantiwar said, "Afzal Guru should also be sent to the gallows. India will prove its determination to fight terrorism only after the death sentence to Guru is executed."

Congress MLA from Colaba Annie Shekhar distributed sweets and party workers burst crackers to celebrate the hanging of Ajmal Kasab.

Describing Mumbai terror attack case and its trial as unique, Maharashtra ATS chief Rakesh Maria said the execution of Pakistani gunman Ajmal Kasab is the best fitting tribute to victims as well as security personnel who laid down their lives fighting terrorists.

"It is indeed a matter of great pride that the case ended in an expected way. It is the best fitting tribute to the memory of the police security officers and men as also 166 innocent people in mindless carnage of 26/11," Maria said.

Meanwhile, jubilations broke out in adjoining Thane district as the news of Kasab's hanging spread.

Thousands of students from tribal Wada taluka in the district assembled at an education complex here to celebrate Kasab's hanging.

Similar scenes were witnessed in Nashik city in north Maharashtra with the social and political organisation bursting crackers.

Punjab

Punjab unit of Congress today welcomed the hanging of Kasab, saying "justice had finally been done in the case."

A PPCC release said, "every law abiding citizen of the country feels relieved over the justice done in the case."

Saluting the legal and judicial system of the country, the party's state unit said that despite the live video footage of Kasab's acts of terror and killing people, due process of law was followed right from the trial court up to the President of India.

Madhya Pradesh

Hailing the hanging of Pakistani gunman Ajmal Kasab, BJP and Congress workers burst firecrackers and distributed sweets in the crowded markets of Rajwada Chowk, Rajendra Nagar and Chandan Nagar here today, police DIG A Sai Manohar said.

BJP's Sanskritic Prakoshth convenor Vikas Awasti and Youth Congress' Girish Joshi led the group waving party flags and raised slogans separately like "Vande Matram", "Congress Zindabad", "UPA government Zindabad", the cop said.

Congressmen were seen carrying a poster-portrait of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, offering sweets to the picture.

There was foolproof security and vigilance in Indore after Kasab's hanging, as a precautionary measure, he said.

Karnataka

The ruling BJP also hailed the hanging of Kasab.

"Though coming belated, it is good that a decision has been taken", state unit BJP President K S Eswarappa said in a statement here.

Through this action, India has demonstrated that it would not tolerate terror activities, he said and wanted the government take a decision on Afzal Guru, facing death sentence for Parliament attack.

J&K

BJP today took out a celebration rally in the city and demanded the execution of Afzal Guru, who stands convicted in 2001 Parliament attack case.

"Like the hanging of 26/11 attack convict Ajmal Kasab today, we demand that 2001 Parliament attack accused Afzal Guru should also be hanged soon," BJP state chief Shamsher Singh Manhas told reporters here.

"We welcome the hanging of the Kasab--better late than never--," he said.

Manhas demanded Guru should be hanged so that a strong message is sent across that perpetrators of terror attacks on India would be brought to justice.

Guwahati

Firecrackers were burst here today as the news of hanging of Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab spread.

Members of prominent anti-insurgency organisation Assam Public Works(APW) laid out strings of crackers on the main road at Guwahati Club area and ignited them.

Kasab's hanging would send a strong message to all terrorist outfits that they will meet with the same fate, APW said.

Its members took out a banner with a picture of Kasab with noose around his neck and 'Celebration on Kasab's death. India Jindabad' written on it, besides an effigy of Kasab with a white shroud covering it.
