V.K. Singh May Join Farmers to Oppose Sugar Decontrol
Former Army Chief V K Singh today took his protest against the central government a step further when he indicated he may join a canegrowers' planned gherao of Parliament on December 4.

Appearing on a new platform to back Rashtriya Kisan Mazdoor Sangathan's (RKMS) demand for rejection of Rangarajan Committee report on freeing the sugar sector, he said the committee's recommendation on doing away with State Advisory Price (SAP) and cane reservation area will adversely affect the farmers of northern states.

Addressing a press conference, Singh and RKMS Convenor V M Singh released a letter they wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for rejecting the Rangarajan Committee report.

"In case the report is not rejected, canegrowers of northern states would gherao Parliament on December 4 as a protest against the said report," the letter said.

Asked whether he supports the call for a gherao of Parliament, the former Army Chief said, "I am endorsing a call which is in the interest of farmers."

On joining the gherao, he said, "we will cross the bridge when we reach there.....Whether that situation will come or not, we will see. I am quite sure the Prime Minister is competent enough to relook at the report."

He said the revenue sharing formula suggested by the committee is not fair and does not provide a level-playing field to northern states, where sugar recovery is below 9 per cent. But the panel suggests 70 per cent revenue be paid based on an average 10.31 per cent recovery of sugar.

Singh demanded that the Centre should not fix fair and remunerative price (FRP) and current system of SAP and cane area reservation should continue. He said the farmers' body has no objection to other recommendations of the panel.

I guess the Congress Govt would rather V K Singh joined some foreign arms dealer than join a political organisation! What is wrong if a retired person whether of the military or bureacracy or judiciary or businee joins politics or fights for farmers' rights?

Gen. Singh must be careful about where he treads. Whether he likes it or not, he carries the distinguished legacy of having served the army.

The other day, Mullah Owaisi was invited to debate on the issue. Quite obviously, the pimp media and UPA wants to give the anti-corruption movement a tint of communalism vs (pseudo) secularism. Gen. Singh should simply refuse to engage in any debate or arguments with bigots like Owaisi - not for himself; nor for his crusade; but for the sake of the sanctity of the army.

Gen Singh must reconsider his decision. Politics demands astute political campaigns and rhetoric. Gherao of any type is not of that class. Moreover, it has been so awfully discredited by misguided trade unionism that its very mention drives the aam aadmi away from it. The cancer of corruption in India can never be rooted out by gherao or dharana-pradarshan. The masses need to be educated. So far they have only been exploited in the name of garibi hatao, revolution, corruption,GDP and subsidy. Indeed, it was all in the name of the aam aadmi but was swallowed by organised criminal political gangs. If public spirited persons can help in de-criminalization of politics in India, it will be their singular contribution to the nation. Presently even bureaucracy stands criminalized- threats to the Gen himself from arms dealers or their agents flaunting their rank and Khemkas of India is proof of that.We must help to cleanse the administration wherever it comes under unlawful stress for delivering public service honestly.
