A local court has sentenced a former prison officer to five years' imprisonment in connection with the custodial death of an accused in Beed jail three years ago.
The court yesterday sentenced Beed jail's former prison officer Dattatreya Devrao Sonwane to five-year rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 5,000.
In March 2009, Sonwane allegedly beat up an accused, Namdev Vaijnath Sable, who sustained injuries and subsequently died in hospital.
Later the deceased's postmortem report mentioned head injury as the cause of death following which the case was handed over to the local crime branch.
A charge sheet was later filed in the case by the crime branch.
After hearing the case, the district and sessions court yesterday concluded that Sonwane did not kill Sable intentionally and thus awarded him five years' imprisonment along with the fine.
Three others accused in the case were acquitted by the court.
