Karunanidhi Turns Down 2 Vacant Cabinet Posts

With speculations rife about a Union cabinet reshuffle, the Congress has discussed the issue with DMK, the largest ally of the UPA with 18 MPs after the exit of the Trinamool Congress.

Union Minister V Narayansamy called on DMK chief M Karunanidhi here yesterday but the latter is learnt to have turned down the offer for the induction of his party MPs in the Manmohan Singh-led cabinet, party sources said.

The DMK chief, whose party's quota of two Cabinet portfolios remain vacant after the exit of A Raja and Dayanidhi Maran over the 2G spectrum allocation scam, is not keen to have them filled, party sources said, adding, the same had been conveyed to Narayanasamy, who came as the Prime Minister's emissary.

DMK, which lends crucial support to UPA, has not been pressing for induction of its party men into the cabinet and Karunanidhi gave enough hints when he said that such issues are only discussed at the key decision-making bodies of the party like Executive or General Council.

Even in the last reshuffle, DMK was not given any berth.

In an embarrassment to the UPA, Karunanidhi had extended his party's support to the September 20 nation-wide bandh called by opposition parties against the Centre's decision to allow 51 per cent FDI in retail trade and increase diesel price.

Who needs cabinet posts ? Especially with more scams surfacing between now and 2014, it is anybody'e guess what will happen in 2014. Time enough to save Kanimozhi and Marans from any more ignominy.Besides  joining the so called UDF srakar in 2014, will depend on how many MPs the DMK can provide to a 'collision' government then. Wouldn't it be fun  to have Nitish as PM backed by a sulking Congress with the DMK playing footsie, while every one gets richer on granite, lignite ,cement, oil reserves etc etc all waiting to be auctioned or 'allotted' to friends and relatives. The DMK is a past master at the game of lighting a beedi when the house is on fire.Wisely they tave refused ministerial berths now for greater gains tomorrow.

It is perfectly understandable. The last thing Karunanidhi wants is a family fight between Alagiri and Kanimozhi.

perh karuna thinks cong may lose power by 2014 or earlier, so he is distancing himself slowly. if bjp-nda or some third front takes power soon, his party will quickly join it so that they can get most corruption-possible ministries to continue making money for mk's family. dmk has no permanent friends in politics, only permanent family-wealth interests.
