Apex transporters' body All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) has called a 24-hour token strike from tomorrow midnight against the recent massive hike in diesel prices by the UPA government.
The decision to go on a strike was taken after the AIMTC held an emergency meeting here today.
"We demand a roll back. We have decided to keep the trucks off the roads for one day as a mark of protest," AIMTC president Malkit Singh Bal told reporters.
The diesel price hike has already shot up the operation cost of transport sector which is already under the burden of ever-increasing prices of toll, tyres, spare parts and lubricants, he lamented.
The government has triggered the "tsunami of inflation" by going ahead with its decision of a steep hike of more than Rs five per litre of diesel, he alleged.
The AIMTC president claimed that 75 lakhs trucks will go off the roads due to the token strike all over the country.
He said they have given a 30-day time to the government to take back its decision, failing which the transporters will resort to an indefinite
'chakka jam'.
