Anti-KNPP Protests: Udahyakumar Doesn't Surrender
Anti-nuclear movement leader S P Udhayakumar tonight gave up his plan to surrender to the police after a making dramatic appearance to do do so and was whisked away by his supporters.

Anti-corruption activist Arvind Kejriwal turned up at nearby Idinthakarai, venue of a 48-hour hunger strike launched by anti-nuclear protesters, expressed his solidarity with them and was believed to have asked Udayakumar, convenor of People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE), not to surrender.

Udhayakumar turned up at Idinthakarai and announced he would surrender at 9 PM in the presence of a "prominent non-political national leader."

But the emotional protestors said they would not allow the surrender and soon thereafter, Udhayakumar was whisked away by his supporters in a boat, leaving others clueless about his whereabouts.

Addressing the over 1,000 protesters a day after police opened fire at a group of fishermen in Tuticorin district killing one of them, he said the protest against the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant would continue even if he was arrested.

The PMANE leader had earlier said he was surrendering as he had information that police were plotting a house-to-house search on the pretext that five of their men had been taken hostages by the protesters.

He alleged Tamil Nadu government, backed by the Centre, had let loose repression on protesters.

"I am not afraid of being arrested ... Even if they arrest me, people will continue the agitation," said Udhayakumar, against whom police have launched a hunt after yesterday's foiled bid by the protesters to lay siege to KNPP.

Police said the situation was calm but they are keeping a strict vigil.

The entire road leading to Idinthakarai from here was heavily guarded and police could be seen in strength in and around Kudankulam which had turned into a battlefield yesterday between protesters and police.

This is the Christian power in southern districts of Tamil Nadu.Udhaya Kumar's agitation is only to garner more money from the US evangelical groups for supposedly agitation against nuclear power project. With the exploding Christian population in southern districts of TN,political parties are falling at the feet of Bishops for getting Christian votes. This is the Christian version of vote bank politics, like the Muslim vote bank in the north.Jayalalithaa had to bend backwards to please the Bishops to get votes for her party. Now,she is unable to take stern action against people like Udhaya Kumar. One should not forget as to how the Christian fishermen vehemently opposed the installation of the statue of Swami Vivekananda at Kanyakumari. It is Muslim power in the north, and it is Christian power in the South and N-E.Hindus count for nothing.

The incident clearly demonstrates any anti socal element can call himself  a convener of a "violent gandhian movement"and run riot wih the public order. There are urchin politicians who try to grab the opportunity posing as his active support with the covert intention to seek his support.  Was the protesting organisation a registered one to have a convenor, president, treasurer and a host of other office bearers. The real intention is not public service but create an opportunity to pose as though servicing people but to earn hush money and ditch the followers. Here in tamil nadu, there are illiterates, half literates, hippocratic intellectuals only with a lot the gullible public. When there is heavy shortage of electricity involving the life line of the country, here we see a set of scoundrels trying to hold the nation to ransom by oranising crowds by daily wages. Fishermen are not interested to go for fishing when he gets five hundred rupees apart from free  biriyanis and liquor just for sitting under shamiana to pose for protest. we see politically bankrupts like vaiko and tirumavalavan courting arrest.
