Maken Proposes Giving Marks to Students for Fitness
In a bid to ensure better health and and promote sports culture among kids, Sports Minister Ajay Maken today came up with a proposal under which school children will get marks for their physical fitness.

Currently marks and grades are linked to academic performance, but the new proposal seeks to give some weightage to physical fitness in schools all over the country.

While unveiling the exposure draft on National Physical Fitness Programme (NPFP), which is at a discussion stage, Maken said in order to ensure fitness among all school children, a system needs to be put in place that would assess and ascertain a child's physical fitness from class V onwards.

Stating that the scheme needs to be motivational rather than coercive, Maken said, "The achievement of fitness by a child has to be rewarded in a manner similar to reward for academic achievement."

According to the proposed draft, the top 10 percentage of gender wise performers shall be given an additional 3 per cent to the percentage obtained by him/her in academic disciplines.

Subsequently, performers between top 10 to 20 percentage will get additional 2.5 per cent, performers between 20 to 30 percentage will get 2 per cent, between 30 to 40 percentage will get 1.5 per cent and between 40 to 50 percentage will get additional 1 per cent weightage in their marking, which may be converted into grades as per prevalent norms.

"The aim is to bring about a change in the attitude among not only the children but general public. The programme can bring about a cultural change," said Maken.

The student's performance would be graded and fed into the child's 'Assessment Card' and the school's 'Fitness Assessment Forms' as designed by the Lakshmibai National University for Physical Education (LNUPE), Gwalior.

Dear Sir,

You have to start somewhere! After all these years of neglect we're happy this Minister is taking some long needed measures for student fitness.

It has been proved time and again that participation in sports and games is the best method of character building - a trait our country sorely needs!

Ajay Maken has been amongst the few bright spots in an otherwise sham cabinet. Sadly, he has been unable to do much on account of budgetary constraints.

What he must definitely achieve is to have an extra-curricular stream (music, painting, sports etc.) as part of the syllabus and progress reports. It is a shame that a country of over billion cannot compete globally in any sport, except the one played by a handful of nations (that too, after the 1983 triumph).

While the enthusiasm of the young minister is appreciable, I am tempted to offer him a small piece of free advice: pl don't give "power" to the physical instructors to extract rent from innocent school children. In this country even if you give university admission forms free of charge, there would be somebody extracting price by manipulating the system. Even technology has failed in front of these elements (rail reservations) and computerisation of government websites (try getting contact details of a few govt/PSU/Banks top officers contact details or try to reach then on the given phone, fax or e-mail and get frustrated). But the programme is nationally beneficial: it will half the health budget of the country, reduce the load on medical services and bring down the police cases by at least 75%. That is the value of games, sports & NCC in grooming good citizens in the country. This is the essence of my experience as a student, player, Senior Under Officer, Lecturer and civil servant. If the minister does any such things, he will be making valuable contribution as minister. Sports ministry has been treated for decades as a treasure house for loot and perpetuating a shady sports oligarchy in the country. That is why it has always been rewarded with the least ambitious secretaries & other officers and ministers. We can only hope for the best! Meanwhile the minister can follow the NCC practice of making available uniform and other things and also nutritious snacks for student players.
