Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav with leaders of Left parties and TDP addressing the media at Parliament House in New Delhi regarding their dharna.
In a move that could virtually isolate BJP and its allies, eight parties including the Samajwadi Party and the Left, today joined hands to protest the continued disruption of Parliament, demanding normalcy and a probe by a sitting Supreme Court judge into the coal block allocation issue.
"Our party, along with CPI, CPI(M) and TDP today decided to stage dharna in front of Parliament tomorrow to demand an inquiry into the coal block allocation scam by a sitting Supreme Court judge," SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav told reporters here.
CPI(M) leader Basudeb Acharia said he had spoken to the leaders of BJD and AIADMK "who said they will also participate in tomorrow's dharna", adding that members of CPI(M), CPI, RSP, Forward Bloc, SP, TDP, BJD and AIADMK would join the protest sit-in at the Parliament House complex tomorrow.
"Our attempt is to unite non-NDA, non-UPA parties to demarcate ourselves from BJP and Congress, both of which are involved in corruption relating to mining and therefore do not want a debate in Parliament," he said.
Acharia said the BJP had also made similar allocation of coal blocks in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, apart from the mining scam in Karnataka.
He attacked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for "concealing a lot" in his statement in Parliament and said "many allocations were made when the PM was in charge of the Coal Ministry. ... All auctions were done in an irregular manner."
Acharia's party colleague Sitaram Yechury said "the BJP is as keen on not having a debate as is the Congress. Lot of things will come out of the cupboard. That's why I said it was match-fixing".
After the meeting with Acharia, Gurudas Dasgupta (CPI) and N Nageshwar Rao (TDP), the SP chief said,"we want a probe into it and the guilty should be punished. We want Parliament to function so that we can debate these important issues."
Yechury said the Congress was "equally responsible" for the non-functioning of Parliament "as it is not just the responsibility of the Presiding Officers, but also of the ruling party, to run the House. Congress has to take some steps to restore normalcy in the House".
Maintaining that Prime Minister's statement contained "several distortions" and "patently wrong information", he said that itself vindicates our demand for a discussion. "The Prime Minister owes an explanation to the House".
Asked whether they supported a probe into the coal block allocation by a sitting Supreme Court judge, the CPI(M) leader said he was open to any suggestion for a high-level inquiry provided that it "generates a degree of credibility, it is time-bound and it identifies those responsible for a huge loss to the exchequer".
To a question on the CAG report being further probed by the Public Accounts Committee, Yechury said, "we want PAC to look into it and hope it does so.
"But looking at the division between Opposition parties and Congress in PAC over the telecom scam (CAG) report, this has not allowed the probe into the 2G issue to proceed".
Yechury reiterated the CPI(M) demand for cancellation of all coal blocks allocated, a high-level probe
The meeting of SP, CPI, CPI(M) and TDP leaders came in the backdrop of Parliament failing to transact any business for almost two weeks, with the BJP continuing to create ruckus by pressing its demand for the resignation of the Prime Minister.
