Eyeing a return to power in civic administration, Congress today made frantic efforts to woo voters on the last day of campaigning for polls to the three new civic bodies carved out of MCD.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, leading from the front, addressed a series of election meetings in South and North Delhi in which she appealed to the people to vote for Congress to "usher in an era of efficient, effective and people-friendly municipal administration".

Promising to change the face of the city, she said although her government left no stone unturned to make Delhi a world class city, people were deprived of basic civic services due to "inefficient and corrupt" BJP rule in MCD.

Besides Dikshit, all senior Delhi Congress leaders, including a number of MPs and all Delhi government ministers, crisis crossed the city on the final day of the campaigning.

"Vote for ushering in an era of efficient, effective and pro-people municipal administration," said Dikshit.

The election is also important for Dikshit who had strongly pushed for trifurcation of MCD despite stiff opposition from a section of Congress which had argued that splitting the civic body ahead of polls would badly affect the party.

The party also fielded star power with former India captain Kapil Dev and actress Nagma campaigning for Congress candidates.

Cricketer Virender Sehwag had yesterday campaigned in Dakshinpuri Extension for his sister Anju Meherwal who is contesting the elections on a Congress ticket.

Most of the Congress leaders highlighted achievement of Delhi and central governments and asked the people to punish "corrupt" BJP which ruled MCD for the last five years.
