A National Minority Commission team headed by its chief Wajahat Habibullah will meet Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot next month to suggest ways to improve relations between Gujjar and Meo communities in Bharatpur district, hit by communal violence last month.
"We have asked for a meeting with the Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on 3rd or 4th of November. We will go and discuss how we can help them (Rajasthan government) find a remedy for the situation in Bharatpur," National Commission for Minorities (NCM) Chairman Wajahat Habibullah told
PTI here.
He said the incident was "mishandled" by the police, which provoked the sentiments of people there.
"The NCM team, which visited Bharatpur, has come back with a conclusion that the matter was mishandled by the police, the administration mishandled it. Of course there were mischievous elements who made most of the situation, but police too panicked for which there was no need," Habibullah said.
Nine people from the minority community were killed in Bharatpur in September during a police firing inside a mosque there.
Elaborating the purpose of meeting Rajasthan CM, Habibullah said the Commission is more concerned about restoring peace and harmony in Bharatpur.
"Our concern is not so much about action against those guilty but restoration of communal harmony and confidence between communities there. In our view that is most important. In our commission, we regard this as the precious heritage of India which has to be preserved at any cost," he said.
Meanwhile, seeking report on the incident of communal violence in Rudrapur in Uttarakhand early this month, NCM has written to state Chief Minister B C Khanduri, the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP) there.
"We have sought a report from Uttarakhand on the turn of events which led to riots in Rudrapur. We have also asked about the steps initiated by them to safeguard the minority community there," NCM Member and incharge of Uttarakhand Keki N Daruwala said here.
The reply by the state government is expected by the end of this month.
Communal violence had erupted at Rudrapur in Udhamsingh Nagar district on October 2, leaving four persons dead. A high-level probe was ordered by the Chief Minister following the riots.
