Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee, for the first time since the break up of the alliance with Congress for the May 30 civic polls, did not go hammer and tongs at its ally today, while the Congress said local level adjustments with the TC were on.
In an apparent sign of rapprochement between the parties at the state level, Banerjee claimed at a press conference that a number of Congress candidates had withdrawn in favour her party.
Trinamool Congress General Secretary Mukul Roy said that 20 Congress candidates withdrew in Chinsurah in favour of TC, 11 in Bishnupur, 6 each in Mathabhanga and Bhatpara, 4 in Kalyani 3 each in Bhadreswar and Chandanagore and one in Kolkata.
This was corroborated by state Congress working president Pradip Bhattacharjee.
"Some Congress candidates have withdrawn in favour of the Trinamool Congress in Chinsurah, Chandanagore, Kalyani, Mathbhanga and Bishnupur and other places," Bhattacharjee told
PTI."Today was the last date of withdrawal of nomination for 81 municipalities, including Kolkata. We had left to the local party organisations to decide whether to have local level adjustments with the Trinamool Congress. We are not against break up of the alliance with Trinamool Congress.
"On the contrary we instructed local party organisations if they thought that it was possible to have local level adjustments with TC, go for it," Bhattacharjee said.
Attacking the CPI(M), the Trinamool Congress chief said, "People will decide whether CPI(M) will be in power or not, whether terror will prevail in the state or not. The people will have the last word."
She said the main poll plank would be development with a human face.
