The Horror of Ragging that Aman Kachroo Faced
Terming that 'the demon of ragging haunted the juniors persistently in classes and colleges premises as they were under the continuous wicked vigil of senior students' an official report on the probe of the death of 1st year MBBS student Aman Kachroo highlighted the horrors that freshers underwent at the institute.

The report, tabled by the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Kangra Sandeep Kumar to the state government last week mentions that there was an `illegal' model code of ragging that existed in Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College in Tanda and freshers were subjected to barbaric acts of indecency.

"(Students had to walk) with bend head with tonsured hair, black trousers and white shirt, red brief and vest, no eye to eye contact with the seniors, no talks with the fellow girl students and listening to seniors carefully whenever addressed as Jangu (fresher), the report based on the probe said.

The unofficial rules for ragging had shameful instructions for freshers to 'keep a condom (passport), match box (ticket), nipple (visa) and whistle' in the pocket all the times.

The report says that the poor fellows (juniors) followed instructions of senior students and they were tossed from one room to the other while being ragged.

Highlighting other horrors that took place in the college premises and hostel the report states, "the freshers were made to perform all sorts of indecent acts such as yelling abuses at a high pitch, standing nude, assuming torturous postures, smoking, drinking (liquor)and masturbating in the corridors."

The ADM said that many freshers told him that many seniors got their assignments done through them.

Narrating the events between March 6 to March 8 leading to death of 19-year old Kachroo, the report said that in the intervening night of 6/7 March, 2009, four senior students (now in judicial custody) entered the junior boys hostel in an inebriated state in wee hours.

Joginder Singh, the security guard on duty at the entrance let these boys enter without any resistance.

"All the freshers were called in the common room and were lined up with their heads down. They were slapped, made to stand and sit in torturous postures and their heads were banged against the wall. They were slapped, punched and their heads banged against the wall by the four senior boys", the report noted.

Kachroo suffered ear pain because of severe beating in the beginning and therefore left the common room. But, his absence was noticed by one of the accused students Ajay Verma who called him back to the common room, the probe indicates.

Despite his pleas, Aman was badly thrashed by all the four seniors, more particularly by Ajay Verma, it added.

The sort of ragging continued till early morning in the common room and some other juniors were again called to another room where they were subjected to more verbal abuse.

Revelations of Kachroo's room mates to the probe team indicates that Aman was quite often targeted since he stood out from other students, the report said, adding that, that this was not an exceptional episode of ragging in the college.

The probe also mentioned about previous ragging incidents in the college when a first year student Vishal Chandel had been locked up, beaten badly and hair tonsured, the report, that also contained photographic evidence, said.
