A journalist was today arrested for allegedly preparing fake marriage certificates of famous personalities including Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi and Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif.

"The accused identified as Anand Purohit had paid Rs 5,000 to a broker of Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) to prepare fake marriage certificates of Rahul, Katrina and Kalawati," Deputy Superintendent of Police (Crime) Jitendra Singh told PTI.

Kalawati, the widow of debt-ridden farmer from Vidarbha, shot to fame after she was mentioned by Rahul in Parliament.

According to the certificates, while Rahul was wedded to Kalawati, Katrina was the wife of a local MLA.

Purohit allegedly prepared the fake marriage certificate of Katrina with local BJP MLA Ramesh Mendola.

The accused after his arrest, claimed he did so to expose the "loopholes" in the system.

Singh, however, alleged that Purohit wanted to create sensation in the media.

Purohit had scanned the certificates and e-mailed them to media nation-wide, police said.

Police is on the lookout for the IMC broker, Singh said.

IMC has already termed the certificates as "fake and bogus" after an internal probe.
