26/11: 1st Batch of Intelligence Cadre Out
A year after 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, Maharashtra Government has focussed on strengthening the intelligence cadre, and the first batch is out on the job.
"The first batch of intelligence cadre trained at Maharashtra Intelligence Academy is out on the job and training for the next batch is on," a senior official from Home Department told PTI.
The intelligence agencies came under fire after the attacks, following allegations that they failed in providing information about the attacks to police department and the Government.
The Government claimed that it has done a lot of work after the attacks, like upgradation of police force and forming Force One, an elite security force.
"A fund of Rs 126 crore was made available for the security measures and we would soon make the information on security measures taken public so that people know that lot of things have been done in the city for their security," the official said.
Setting up the Force One was a major step taken by the Government and its first batch is ready for assignment, the official said.
Over 1,600 young policemen from the state expressed their willingness to join the Force and were given rigorous training by Israeli and German trainers, he said.
The government has alloted 80 acre of land at Goregaon in western suburbs to the Force for training and easy access in emergency situation, he said.
The government has ensured proper compensation for the families of policemen killed during the attacks, jobs to the family members and free education upto graduation to the children, the official said.
Most of the suggestions and recommendation given by Ram Pradhan Committee report, which probed the attacks, were implemented by the Government, he said.
For the coastal security, the Government has provided high speed boats for patrolling and 'Sagar Suraksha Dal', a group of local fishermen, has been formed to collect information.
"The fishermen have been provided mobile phones and mobile SIM cards to keep coastal security and police updated if they notice something suspicious," the official said, adding, about 40,000 fishermen have received identity cards from the government.
