India Wants Peace with Neighbours: Manmohan
Reaching out to Pakistan for the third consecutive day, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday said India wishes to resolve all outstanding issues with it and all other neighbours through dialogue and spirit of partnership overcoming the "areas of difficulties".
He noted that Pakistan is grappling with a major problem on account of rising terrorism and wished it success in dealing with it.
"We seek to live in peace with our own neighbourhood and with the world. We have always been and wish to remain good neighbours and good global citizens," Singh said addressing the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit here.
Contending that India's destiny is "intrinsically linked" with that of its neighbours, he said, "we seek good relations with each one of them".
He pointed out that he had repeatedly said that India saw its security and prosperity in the progress and stability of its neighbours.
"We sincerely wish to resolve all outstanding issues with our neighbours through dialogue and in the spirit of partnership and friendship that should rightly characterise our relations," Singh said.
He acknowledged that there were "difficulties of expanding areas of cooperation" with Pakistan and other neighbours and said these have to be "overcome".To a question on his peace offer to Pakistan in the wake of the internal situation in that country, Singh said, "Pakistan is grappling with many internal problems. Rise of terrorism is one of them. I wish them success (in combating terrorism)."
"India will be happy to extend a helpful and supportive hand to all its neighbours," he said at the Summit where Pakistan's High Commissioner Shahid Malik was among the host of dignitaries.
"We should not allow our past to limit our future," the Prime Minister said, adding "we need a leadership in our region that can take a long-term view and has the courage to take bold decisions."
On Wednesday, Singh had in Srinagar renewed India's offer of friendship with Pakistan and followed it up yesterday, saying there were no pre-conditions for holding dialogue but made it clear that cross-border terrorism has to end from the country.
To a question on China, he said notwithstanding the differences on border issue, the two countries have immense opportunities to work together in cooperation.
"(This is) because there is ample space in the world to accommodate the growth ambitions of both India and China. We have problems of border but we have also agreed that pending the resolution of the boundary questions, peace and tranquility should prevail along the border," he said.
At the same time, Singh said the Government was paying adequate attention to security aspect in relation to China. "I think security concerns are the primary responsibility of every civilised country and you have my assurance that we will and we have been paying adequate attention to protect and preserve the security of our country," the Prime Minister said.
He was asked to comment on China extending its influence in the neighbourhood, including Nepal and Pakistan, and whether India's armed forces were prepared to deal with the situation.
In the context of reaching out to neighbours, Singh quoted Rabindranath Tagore, who had said that "we must not allow narrow domestic walls to confine us to the deadly sand of dead habits."
The Prime Minister said "Instead, we should dip into the clear stream of reason and walk forward into ever-widening thought and action so that we can build not just a new India by 2020 but a new South Asia."
Earlier, HT Media Limited Chairperson Shobhana Bhartia appreciated the Prime Minister's leadership and contribution towards creation of new India.
