NDA partner omar coming to rescue of parivar. As UPA has pulled a fast one by hanging afzal very sneakily, NDA wants to extract whatever mileage it can. Only it does not realize that it is like flogging a dead horse!

Amaresh Mishra's column in TOI condemning the role of the BJP and of right wing politics in skewing our national discourse is worth reading, even if we do not agree with his views on Afzal's guilt or innocence:

"Then why was Afzal hanged? This is where the complexity arises — if the Supreme Court of India gives a right-wing, bizarre judgment, how much a liberal Government—such as the Congress led UPA — can do? A Leftist government can of course ground to pulp an unfair Court judgment. But a liberal Government is very vulnerable to right-wing pressure, especially when the global atmosphere is anti-Muslim and right-wing, and major institutions of the Indian State—like the bureaucracy, Police, Army, secret services, everything—are either badly infiltrated by the RSS or under the grip of Islamophobia.

"Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru said that majority communalism is more dangerous than minority communalism. In that sense, Saadhvi Pragya and Raj Kumar Purohit and other Hindutvawaadi terrorists pose a greater menace to Indian national interests. Afzal Guru was just a pawn in a larger game. But Raj Kumar Purohit, the chief accused in the Malegaon, Mecca Masjid and Samjhauta Express blasts, is a man of the Military Intelligence. His charge-sheet says his group wanted to organize a right-wing coup in India, scrap the Indian Constitution and declare India a fascist Hindu Rashtra.

"The RSS and the BJP have never once condemned Raj Kumar Purohit, Saadhvi Pragya and other Hindutvawaadi terrorists. Recently, a totally weird operation was launched by the Hindutvawaadi forces in the Indian army to save Raj Kumar Purohit. The latter was portrayed as a plant send by the Military Intelligence to spy on right-wing groups engaged in terror!

"Rajiv Gandhi and Beant Singh’s killers will get the punishment they deserve—Delhi gang-rape accused also will be tried speedily. But Government of India needs to get its act together on the Hindutva terror angle. This current poses a direct threat to the very existence of Indian democracy, secularism, the Indian republic, and the life and liberty of Indian citizens. Fast track courts need to be set-up; just as Afzal Guru was tried speedily, Purohit, Saadhvi Pragya and others should be tried within a six-month time framework and punished immediately if found guilty. Institutions involved in Hindutvawaadi thinking — especially the Military Intelligence, Intelligence Bureau, secret services, media and the judiciary—need to be purged and detoxified from such influences.

"The RSS-BJP and people like Narendra Modi should stop being hypocritical. They are practising double standards—one for Afzal Guru and the other for the likes of Raj Kumar Purohit. Till date, Narendra Modi has not condemned Sanghi-Hindutvawaadi terrorists. For the time being, a liberal State is tolerating Sangh Parivar excesses and Narendra Modi’s deviations. The Courts too are taking a soft view as far as Sangh Parivar and Modi are concerned."

 Anwaar#3,

The blindness of compulsive congress supporters is amazing! The article quoted by you is an exercise in sophistry. May be Afzal was convicted because of the then prevalent zeitgeist. What prevented the Govt. from seeking a judicial review? Or appointing an enquiry commisssion to find the truth behind the Parliament attack case? When it is known that the role of Special cell of Delhi Police with encounters like Anzal Plaza shootout (where a couple of businessmen were shot dead and it was claimed that they were LeT militants) is dubious, could not the home ministry enquired into it?

To claim that hanging of Afzal Guru was a necessary evil and now stiff punishments will follow for other communalists is ridiculous. We have seen the punishments handed over to Togadia (case registered - so what ? Umpteen cases have been registered against Raj Thackeray). Lest anyone forgets, it was congress govt that gave a state funeral to a thug like Bal Thackeray.

Very clearly BJP and Congress have made a deal. One will raise the issue of communalism, the other that of corruption, but neither will go for the kill. They will share the loot. There is plenty of dough for everyone.

I would rather suffer the necessary evil of an idiot like Kejriwal and vote for AAP.

Saroja,

>> What prevented the Govt. from seeking a judicial review?

Good question! But the article is spot on re: Hindutva terrorism and BJP's double standards.

Amaresh Mishra's article shared by Anwar is hillarious. I had a nice laugh reading it. I guess Prashant Pandey now has a competition for super Congress Stooge role.

Amaresh Misra the new twit in town says:

"Fast track courts need to be set-up; just as Afzal Guru was tried speedily, Purohit, Saadhvi Pragya and others should be tried within a six-month time framework and punished immediately if found guilty."

If Misra took time off from smoking illegal substances, he would know that the issue is not the lack of fast-track courts. The issue is that the investigative agencies haven not been able to file a charge-sheet even after 5 years. If they went to court, fast-track or otherwise, the case would get thrown out. So its is better to extend their custody indefinitely, occasionally leak info to the media, say things like 'Hindu terrorism' or BJP runs terror camps' and continue to play politics with it.

So TOI blogs has added a fourth idiot to the three earlier ones - Aakar Patel, Kingshuk Nag, and Prashant Pandey.

A terrorist is given death penalty in 2005 and the governemnt of the day plays politics and delays his hanging till 2013 due to political compulsions. And the new idiot Misra has a problem with Narendra Modi not condemning Sadhvi and Purohit. Such is the quality of our progressives. Yet they have a ready market of cheerleaders!

Omar Abdullah's position has been clear and consistent for a very long time and in the game of politics the BJP is wasting its time going for him as they aren't going to win anything.

I am opposed to the death penalty, but as long as it is on the statute books, so be it. However, the courts and administration have displayed an alarming lack of consistency in handling it. As they say in cricket, umpiring decisions, good and bad, are accepted as made in good faith without bias as long as the umpires are consistent. This unfortunately cannot be said about the way the death penalty is awarded and mercy petitions are handled. It is therefore, inevitable that there will be very justifiable allegations of double standards against the judiciary, the government and the parties in opposition.

All that needs to be said about Anwaar's new guru, Amresh Mishra, and his blog has been said. I thought Prashant Pandey was a buffoon, but this guy!!!

Amaresh Mishra is a replica of Sanket Biswas, a regular blogger here. Try reading his other articles where he blames Brahmins for all the ills of the country as Sanket does.

Saroja Mami,

I was amazed to see you psot against Anwarbhai.

a few questions as a "Devil's Advocate":

1) Afzal Guru had said that CSF had asked him to escort "some people" to Delhi. This Link was not sufficiently scrutinised.

2) Afzal guru had said that he is not happy with his Lawyer. Why the lawyer was not changed?

3) Guru's lawyer never placed any witnesses in his favour. WHY? He merely cross examined Govt's witnesses.

Having said that (in SICKULAR style), I am sure that whatever evidence was presented beofre Supreme Court (Tarun Vijay has detailed it in ToI) "must have been" enough to pronounce him guilty.
