It is a good step if they succeed in keeping a Congressman away from occupying the presidential position. In case there is non-Congi government in 2014, it will preclude the possibility of a HR Bharadwaj or Kamla Beniwal enactment at the state level from happening at the Center.

" but is open to supporting anyone chosen by the non-Congress parties."

The logic is bizzarre. If non Congress parties come up with the names of Pranab and Ansari, will the BJP support them? Sushma Swaraj, as usual has no clue what she is talking about.

MMS and PC thought the same in the CVC case, and ended up with egg on their face.

If Congress has any sense left after years of insanity, they would rather have Pranab Mukherjee as the PM, not predsident. He is their best bet for 2014.

BJP is probably looking at 2014 where both NDA and UPA may end up scrambling for majority. An ex-Congressi President doesn't suit them.

Dr. Kalam should stay away from the race. His distinguished goodwill is not worth staking for the muck of Indian politics.

I don't know how BJP folks are handling the PR business here.
I am saddened to see that people like Chandan Mitra are acting defensive.
Why?

This is obvious that some friendly-media will do everything to take them down, by they must go on offensive.
It is obvious that if it is about numbers, they have no chance; then why not at least win the PR battle?

Take an example, Arnav Goswami asks, "Is BJP using Kalam to score some points?"
Chandan Mitra is Busy telling that they are not.
No, you don't have to do that.

BJP might well be doing that, but can't these guys emphasis that when NDA had an opportunity, they brought the guy whom everyone respect.
Unlike Congress, which brings loyalist like Buta Singhs or Pratibha Patils.

A "party with difference" should talk of "right thing to do", rather than what are the numbers and who is what.

Given that people like me are no-bodies to have such "chhota munh badi baat"; but NDA lost again and again in this PR thing. Be it 2004 election, or 2007 or 2009 Advani vs Modi.
You guys should do some home work first really.

I agree. BJP  should have declared their sopport for Kalam much earlier, rather than giving the impressiion that Pranab might be acceptable. They forgot the simple fact that any Congress chap would always be super loyal to Sonia Gandhi and the dynasty, though he might have issues with minor players like Chidambaram, etc.

BUT BUT BUT, what happens if Congress gets up a 2 digit count in 2014 lok sabha polls? Will our SECULAR MASTANS AND DONS and our Sonia family representative @ Rashtrapathi bhavan declare the elections null and void? Well in that case, it will be nice to see a NDA+ govt at delhi, using every chance to humiliate the Congie chamcha @ Rashtrapathi bhavan.

Wishful thinking congies? Well you aint seen anything folks wake and smell the coffee and understand how the entire nation (except some votebanks) is at rage with UPA's corrupt, feudal misgoverannce.

There is nothing apolitical in BJP's choice of Dr Kalam for presidentship. They are just being 'politically correct' with their choice, expecting little opposition to his candidature. (They could be proved wrong by other, wily politicians here). Names from backward classes, dalits, minorities, women always find favour in the choice of presidentship. Afterall, president's post itself is one of tokenism. There are any number of apolitical persons deserving to occupy this seat, but the people who elect are all politicians, each with his/her own game plan. So it is foolish to expect miracles here.
