Outlook India : Prof Arrested for Circulating Anti-Mamata Cartoons
PTI | Kolkata | Apr 13, 2012

I did not observe any derogatory caricatures of Mamta didi by Prof Mahapatra of Jadavpur university. At least,so it seemed. The cartoons are supposed to be hilarious to tickle your bones. If Didi wanted these to be serious then there is something seriously wrong with her.Prof Mahapatra initially arrested for circulating the cartoons on face book was later released.

There was a clear violation of the "Right to freedom of speech and Expression" enshrined in the Constitution of India .The court may exhibit judicial activism by taking suo motu cognizance of un-constitutional action by Mamta didi and set aside the relevant order besides passing serious strictures against her government.

Mamta didi is known for her mercurial, impulsive and autocratic temperament. These are not expected of a leader of her stature. The public expects maturity in handling emotive issues. There is no place for rhetorics. One wonders why did Markandey Katju , Chairperson PCI, not register his dissent against infringements of fundamental rights by the West Bengal government?

Markandey Katju seems occupied in petitioning the Apex court for dismissing orders of Allahabad high court that prohibited the Media from reporting troops movement during peace time. What is the public interest involved in it. The Indian Express, created a panic in the country. The PM expressed his resentment against this irresponsible reporting . But, not Katju. He has a personal agenda to execute after his post –retirement rehabilitation. I need not elaborate further.

Ret. Justice Katju exercised his right to freedom of speech and expression by making a rather outrageous statement that "95% of indians were fools”. The Aam aadmi refused to react. The news item was quickly withdrawn by HT. Not a single Editorial in the print or TV media registered its dissent.

Shekhar Gupta , sought to rationalize IE’s coverage of troops movement to Delhi by citing the advice of his "Guru" Arun Shourie, perhaps, without latters knowledge. This confession was made during a TV interview ( with Swati Chaturvedi,if my memory serves me right). One wonders whether M Katju’s contemplated petition to the Apex court, had any “public interest”. Seeking annulment of Allahabad High court’s orders , I trust, is motivated by national security and external threat perception ,if troops movements are reported by the Media during peace time except in forward areas.

The Supreme court’s judgement would be keenly awaited by all.

Old habits die hard. Civil servants are used to submitting forms in duplicate. :)

Those from West Bengal who look at Modi as dictatorial, should stare for few minutes at Mamata di.

what communists couldn't do in 33 odd years, mamata did it in less than 2 years, cult of personality, purges and hopefully, she would start with kulaks as well. nevertheless, people get what they deserve in a democracy. bengalis deserve mamta just like the communists.

Many many years ago, when P.H. Pandian was Speaker of the TN Assembly, he had the editor of the Ananda Vikatan, a Tamil weekly, arrested for a cover cartoon that suggested that MLAs were masked thieves and MPs were murderers (or maybe it was pickpockets and dacoits).  This was apparently for a violation of privilege.  Before a court could rule on it, he relented, yielding to the "request" from the then-CM (MGR, before he turned into a vegetable).

Pandian's actions were a perversion of the notion of Parliamentary privilege, which traces its roots back to the days of Republican Rome, when the bodies of the tribunes of the people were considered inviolate and any bodily actions taken to prevent them in the exercise of their duties was punishable by death.  That rule itself was to ensure that said tribunes could not be assassinated by the patricians who ruled the Senate whilst they went about their jobs as guardians of the people's rights.

Mamta-di will go down as a 21st-century Pandian if she does not relent and learn to develop a sense of humor (and a thick skin).  Otherwise, a woman who has built a reputation as a tribune of the underprivileged will have turned her image into that of a tyrant.  Shame on her.

In every blog of mine I had repeatedly said that Mamta will vitiate the sanctity of the massive mandate given to her.Today I can say for sure ,she has.

The women has a very serious problem which requires attention.

The Marxsists screwed up Bengal with no rule and now Mamta will complete Bengals misery by sending it to stone age.

The only way out is thats he should be routed in the Municipal elections and the 2014 elections as well.Honestly she was never going to do any work  as CM and her 1 years rule is ample proof.

Protesting against cartoons is silly irrespective of whether the cartoons target the Prophet or the Chief Minister. If politicians start criminalizing satire they are in effect trying to deprive us of a major weapon of free speech and freedom to dissent.

Famous cartoonist Laxman of TOI would have been arrested a long time ago as his satires were almost always against politicians and bureaucrats.

Trinamool is a Congress offshoot, and hence servility and boot-licking is encoded in the party's DNA. One can take a politician out of Congress, but how does one take congress out of its politician? The good thing is that no one will miss Bal Thakeray now. We have a female version out here in the east.

I think CM Mamata banerjee should have no patience and persevarance to hear the criticisim. If it is happening again and again in her regime, then CPIM would back very soon in state. The West Bengal peoples are watching this bad act of administration.Criticisim make a person piour and strong and criticisim is healthy for our democracy.Criticiser is our real friend not the Stabak(bengali word).

Ha Ha Ha... we  hear of all those gentlemen and ladies who talk about West Bengal being high on HDI .. What HDI ? Arresting people who draw silly cartoons ? Stopping a progressive national railway budget on partisan populist grounds? Pulling down a govt in 2008 because it worked on a defence deal in national interest? All this is sign of high HDI in bengal !!

Gujarat Bashers , where are you hiding now? Go and enjoy your life in West Bengal !
